Farewell Bend

Farewell Bend
current value: $150

This depicts a bend in the Snake River, on the border of Oregon & Idaho. Here the Oregon Trail leaves the river and cuts overland to the Columbia. Near this place, Madame Dorion, the native American wife of Pierre Dorion, interpreter for the Astoria Overland Expedition, escaped with her two children when her husband and nine other members of a scouting party were killed. She and the children walked to the Columbia River in the winter of 1814 and brought the news of the attack to Astoria. I have given the bend of the river her image in photo-etched denim. Pierre is indicated at the farther turn.
